Accomplished Florida-based neurosurgeon Dr. Michael Thomas provides treatments for various conditions affecting the nervous system as a member of the surgical team at Sea Spine Orthopedic Institute in Plantation. Throughout his career as a neurosurgeon, Dr. Michael Thomas has worked to enhance his knowledge and skills through affiliations with medical societies. He currently maintains memberships in several groups, including the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
In its efforts to advance the practice of osteopathic medicine, the AOA conducts a number of advocacy programs and activities. Each year, the organization holds its annual DO Day on Capitol Hill, which provides osteopathic doctors (DOs) and osteopathic medical students the opportunity to meet with key decision-makers in Washington, DC, to advocate for health policies that are important to the osteopathic community.
In 2016, AOA’s DO Day on Capitol Hill was held on April 13. Among the legislative priorities highlighted during this year’s event were Medicare, health information technology, and the Affordable Care Act. In addition, participants discussed regulatory issues related to health care quality, education, and Food and Drug Administration policy, among other things.
Osteopathic medical students and educators who were unable to attend the AOA’s 2016 DO Day on Capitol Hill are encouraged to take part in DO Day To Go, an initiative that provides individuals with the resources needed to advocate for their chosen profession year-round.
